PUP sells a series of Modern and Classical Chinese language textbooks. If you are interested in purchasing these books, you should contact PUP directly. We at CLP sell the audio materials accompanying these textbooks. We also sell a few textbooks that have not yet been published by PUP (i.e. A Reflection of the Reality and China’s Ideals and Perplexities) and discounted older editions of books already published by PUP. You can order these items by following the directions on our order form. We do NOT sell Chinese textbooks currently published by PUP.

The lower price reflects the cost for individual use of the audio materials (i.e. you are a student buying the materials for your own study). The higher price reflects the cost for an institutional version, which includes a licensing agreement form necessary for authorized reduplication of audio materials. Institutional libraries, language labs, and Chinese language teachers planning to distribute the audio materials to their class should order the institutional version.

Distributing physical copies of the audio materials to students enrolled in your Chinese language class is fine. Having the materials available for check out by students and teachers at a language lab or institutional library is fine. Posting the materials on a password protected course website (like Blackboard ) for students enrolled in a certain Chinese class is fine. Posting the materials on a non-password protected website for anyone on the Internet to access is NOT fine! For more details, please refer to your license agreement form. If you have any further questions, please direct them to Princeton University’s Office of Research and Project Administration.

All audio materials are available in digital format and are shipped on a USB drive.

No. We used to sell videos to accompany some textbooks, but we have discontinued them, since they are of poor quality by today’s standards. Technology has improved a lot since the eighties!

No. Since CLP textbooks are either old editions of books that have already been published by PUP or preliminary editions of books that may one day be published by PUP, we do not allow reprinting for course packets or other purposes. This is to avoid copyright troubles, now or in the future.

The CLP office staff travels to Beijing every summer (June – August) to administer the Princeton in Beijing program. We do have a part-time temporary employee available in Princeton to help us process and ship orders. However, during the summer you can expect a delay in responses to inquires and order processing. We appreciate your understanding. The best way to contact us during the summer is by email ( [email protected] ). If you are ordering materials for a course that starts in August or early September, it is best if you place your order before the end of May.
